Frank hails ‘remarkable’ Brentford season after dramatic win

Brentford boss Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank hailed Brentford’s season as “remarkable” after watching his side pick up their third win on the bounce by beating Watford 2-1 – practically securing another year of Premier League football.

Captain Pontus Jansson headed in a dramatic late winner from Christian Eriksen’s free-kick moments after Watford had spurned two excellent chances to score.

And boss Frank praised the character and fitness of his Brentford players to find another last-minute winner against Watford, having also done so in the earlier fixture between the two sides.

“It’s been, in many ways, a crazy season for us – a remarkable season,” Frank said.

“We’ve come up through the play-off final and we have the lowest budget. I think we must remember that on a day like this.

“I’m very pleased with the 39 points of course, very pleased. It’s a tricky one because we always wanted to be an asset to the Premier League. We always wanted to be as high as possible or end up as high as possible.

“We always want to focus on the next game and really have that laser focus and I think that’s why we are on 39 points now.

“That’s why we did well in the beginning. That’s why we came through the wobble, that’s why we’re doing very well now, because we only focus on the next training session or the next game.

“It shows two things, I think. We are unbelievably fit and we keep going throughout the game. And the character and the mentality of the group of players is remarkable.”

Christian Norgaard opened the scoring for the Bees when he finished from close range following a flick-on from Ethan Pinnock’s long throw, before Emmanuel Dennis equalised in the second half.

But the Bees were dealt a blow soon after the opening goal when Ethan Pinnock was withdrawn due to a hamstring injury to be replaced by Mads Bech Sorensen.

“It’s a hamstring injury. We don’t know how bad it is or how good it is, we will assess him on Monday,” Frank added.

“Sergi (Canos) has got a minor hamstring injury as well. Hopefully he’ll be available soon, we’re talking about a few weeks hopefully.

“Zanka got a minor muscle injury in the thigh, as I remember, but we don’t know yet.”
