Frank hails players after victory over Leeds

Thomas Frank hailed his team for managing to edge a game where they well beaten in the possession stats, for once.

The Brentford boss is used to seeing his team hold on to the ball far more than they did in their Easter Monday clash with Leeds.

But even with just 37 per cent possession, they secured an excellent 2-0 victory over the promotion-chasing Yorkshire side.

“Us and Leeds are the two teams with the most possession in the league, but I’m very pleased that we can win a game without having the most possession,” Frank said.

“If you do, that means you defend well and we did that very well today – so that’s pleasing.

“Even if you want to do it [control possession] it’s not always possible and then you need to make sure you defend well.

“I don’t think we’ve been used to seeing that often, that we defend that low, but we have quick players going forward, so it’s natural when we win the ball that we go forward quickly.

“We had discipline, staying in the game, being patient, [showing] big concentration. I am happy, delighted with the performance, the win, the way we did it.”

Frank thought his players fully merited the win, even though they were fortunate to survive a sloppy opening and a strong penalty appeal by Leeds.

“It was a very good performance, I think, and a well-deserved win,” said the Dane. “We knew that we could press them high to create opportunities – we saw that also, the last time we played them.

“The way we defended I’m really pleased, with high pressure, but also the way we defended low. They didn’t create anything in those situations and we did that very well today.

“I think [at times] we gave the ball away too easily and played the wrong passes. But the only way they [Leeds] created chances was when we gave the ball away. We need to do that better.”
