Mark Warburton paid tribute to his players after Brentford’s play-off defeat against Middlesbrough.
The Bees’ remarkable season ended on a sad note at the Riverside, where they lost 3-0 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.
It brought the curtain down on Warburton’s time at the helm – it was announced in February he would not be retained as manager following a disagreement with owner Matthew Benham over the club’s future direction.
“The fans, the players and the staff have all been outstanding,” Warburton said.
“We weren’t the best team on night but the boys all season have been outstanding and they’ll go on from here.”
Warburton was reluctant to discuss his future, simply saying he felt the club would be left “in a healthier state than when I came here.”
He added: “I’ll have a chat to the players and we’ll go from there.”
