Bees will stand firm over Hogan, says Smith

Brentford boss Dean Smith said West Ham will have to up their offer for Scott Hogan if they are to prise him away before Tuesday’s deadline.

Hogan, the subject of several rejected bids from the Hammers, was named on the bench for the Bees’ FA Cup defeat at Chelsea, but came on after 65 minutes as the Bees chased the game, his first appearance since 2 January.

And Smith admitted the transfer saga could continue right up until Tuesday night’s deadline, unless West Ham stump up the extra cash Brentford are demanding.

He said: “He’s got a valuation, which hasn’t been met, and until it is he will remain a Brentford player.

“Whether it happens or not, I don’t know. I’m thinking already about Aston Villa on Tuesday night and Scott’s in my plans until I’m told otherwise.”

Smith insisted Hogan’s lack of match action – and not a desire to protect him from injury – was behind the decision to leave him on the bench.

“Lasse Vibe and Romaine Sawyers have done well the last couple of games and Scott’s not played for three weeks,” Smith said.

“So to start Scott I thought would be a bit of a risk. I knew the tempo was going to be high and it was always the plan to bring him on after an hour.”
