Brilliant Brentford put seven past Luton

Buzzing Brentford ran riot at Griffin Park in a ruthless demonstration of intent, bolstering their challenge for the Championship play-offs.

A five-goal blitz in the first 45 minutes highlighted a shellacking against a poor Luton Town side. A hat trick from Josh Dasilva, alongside goals from Bryan Mbuemo, Ollie Watkins, Mathias Jensen and Said Benrahma made matters so breezy for the Bees in front of a 11,287 crowd.

Thomas Frank’s side, who were aiming to bounce back following Wednesday night’s defeat at Blackburn Rovers, made the perfect first impression against the struggling Hatters when they went in front in just five minutes.

Mbuemo – increasingly influential under Frank – was sufficiently alert to squeeze the ball home beside the post after a visitors’ mix up, when Luton keeper James Shea failed to anticipate Dan Potts’ chested assist to him. Despite the ideal start, it was another 19 minutes before Brentford fashioned their next proper opportunity, Jensen spinning a teasing shot inches over the bar from 20 yards.

Nevertheless, Brentford took full control with a brace of goals within five minutes of each other. Firstly, Watkins forced the ball home, albeit somewhat fortuitously, after Dasilva drove a dangerous ball across the box from the right-hand side.

Then, in 36th minutes, on-form Jensen cleverly made space inside the penalty area before drilling home a right foot shot. Nothing was going right for the Graeme Jones’ men, visibly draining. And classy Dasilva made it 4-0 for the Bees in the 42nd minute. The mercurial midfielder effortlessly spooned the ball from around 20 yards into the top right hand corner when given too much space to size up an opportunity.

There was added, sheer cruelty for Luton in first half added time when Benrahma set up Dasilva to strike again, this time with his right foot – a heavily drilled, angled shot which whizzed past Shea.

The second half followed the same pattern, and the Bees added number six in the 70th minute when Watkins was tripped inside the penalty area by Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu. Benrahma casually slotted home subsequent spot-kick.

Algerian sorcerer Benrahma almost caught out Shea late on with a cleverly spun free kick in what was a completely mismatched affair. For number seven, Sonny Bradley fouled Dasilva in the 87th minute – and the man-of-the-match stepped up and helped himself to a hat trick from the spot.
