Zola not in running for Bees job – Devlin
Brentford chief executive Mark Devlin has insisted that Gianfranco Zola is not being considered for the manager’s job at Griffin Park.
There was speculation that the former Chelsea star could replace outgoing manager Mark Warburton this summer after Zola was seen speaking to Bees owner Matthew Benham at the recent home game against Bolton.
“Gianfranco is not currently under consideration,” Devlin said.
“We have a list of candidates we’re considering at the moment but he’s not one of them.
“Gianfranco is a great name in the game and recently came to watch us against Bolton.
“He was obviously spotted speaking to Matthew but there were lots of high-profile people at the game that day, such as Martin O’Neill.
“Lots of people come to games at Griffin Park for a variety of reasons.”
Brentford announced in February that Warburton will be leaving at the end of the season because a difference of opinion with Benham over the future direction of the club.
He could be in charge for the final time on Saturday when the Bees host Wigan, with a play-off spot possible only if Ipswich or Derby lose their final game of the season.
Zola, 48, is regarded as a Chelsea legend from his seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge. He has since managed West Ham and Watford.
