Alan McCormack wants a longer-term contract and a future coaching role at Brentford after his latest appearance for the club secured him a one-year deal.
McCormack’s Bees contract was due to expire this summer but included a clause that entitled him to a 12-month extension if he made 23 league starts this season.
The 32-year-old triggered the clause by playing in Tuesday’s win against Cardiff but says he would like to sign for two more years.
He said: “I’ll speak to my agent and we’ll see if we can bash out a couple of years.
“The longer and more secure the contract, the better, so we’ll see what happens. The extension is something I knew I could reach if I kept my fitness.
“I had a groin injury just before Christmas, which kept me out for a few weeks, and then I came back and did my calf. That took six to eight weeks so I missed quite a lot of games.
“I was flying just before that, feeling the fittest I’ve ever felt. I feel I’m back there now and I just want to enjoy the rest of the season.
“When you’re out of contract and you know you can still play, and you’ve got to go out and get another club, I just didn’t want that in the summer.
“I’ve got a wife and two kids, mortgages, bills – financially, things that I’ve got to keep running.”
As well as securing a new contract, McCormack is hoping to take his first steps into coaching at Griffin Park.
He explained: “I’m doing my coaching badges this year and if I can get involved with the club and start coaching then it’s something I’ve got a real passion for.
“If I can get into that after my playing days then it’s something I’ll look in to starting in the next 18 months.
“I’m on my ‘B’ badge in the summer and if I can hopefully get that done then move on to the ‘A’ I can then start coaching in the professional game.”
