Douglas header keeps Brentford sixth

Ipswich Town 1 Brentford 1

Jonathan Douglas earned Brentford a point to keep them in sixth place and ahead of fellow promotion hopefuls Ipswich after an enthralling game at Portman Road.

Daryl Murphy tapped the hosts ahead from a corner but Douglas levelled from close range after 25 minutes.

Both sides created plenty of opportunities after the interval, but the Bees had to survive strong late pressure to earn their draw.

Town could have gone 2-0 ahead after Murphy shot home following Richard Chaplow’s corner, when former West Ham striker Freddie Sears went close.

But the Bees had started well and responded in spirited fashion.

Alan Judge almost netted with a headed chance and Douglas then made it 1-1 when he followed up to score after keeper Dean Gerken saved from Stuart Dallas.

With the Bees on top Andre Gray shot wide just before the interval, but the hosts had the better of things in the final 30 minutes.

Murphy wasted a wonderful chance to restore the home side’s lead, somehow shooting over from two yards.

On-loan Leicester City striker Chris Wood also missed the target when well placed, while away keeper David Button made a couple of decent saves to ensure the Bees stay in the Championship promotion places.

Brentford (4-2-3-1): Button; Odubajo, Tarkowski, Moore (Dean 71), Bidwell; Douglas, Diagouraga; Judge (Jota 67), Pritchard, Dallas; Gray (Long 75).
Subs not used: Bonham, McCormack, Toral, Smith.
