Defeat dents Brentford’s promotion bid

MK Dons 2 Brentford 0

Brentford suffered a blow to their hopes of automatic promotion despite dominating much of the game.

They fell behind in the first half when Simon Moore was caught off-guard by a swerving effort from distance by Dean Bowditch.

And after pushing hard for an equaliser in the second half, Stephen Gleeson finished them off with an 85th-minute strike from the edge of the box.

Bees boss Uwe Rosler made three changes from the side that beat Notts County, with Adam Forshaw and Harry Forrester returning and Friday’s matchwinner Bradley Wright-Phillips dropped to the bench for Marcello Trotta.

Both Trotta and Jonathan Douglas misjudged close-range headers early on, before Bowditch’s hopeful effort from 25 yards surprised Moore and slipped underneath the Bees keeper.

Forrester also went close as Brentford pushed for an equaliser but Chris Lines hit the post for the Dons on the stroke of half-time.

Wright-Phillips replaced Trotta at the interval and the Bees continued to dictate the game, but they needed Moore to redeem himself with a fine save to deny Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford on 67 minutes.

Brentford youngster Antonio German came on as a second-half substitute, but neither he nor Wright-Phillips had the desired impact before Gleeson added the second on the counter-attack.

Brentford (4-4-2): Moore; Logan, Dean, Craig, Bidwell; Forshaw, Douglas Diagouraga, Forrester (Saunders 71); Donaldson (German 67), Trotta (Wright-Phillips 46).
Subs not used: Gounet, Adeyemi, Hodson, Reeves.
