Controversy as 10-man Brentford draw

Brentford 0 Carlisle 0

Ten-man Brentford were left frustrated but at least kept their unbeaten start to the league season intact after having Tony Craig sent off in the second half.

Craig was harshly red-carded for a professional foul after challenging striker David Amoo and appearing to win the ball.

And Brentford had what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out late on.

Substitute Toumani Diagouraga knocked the loose ball into the net but Clayton Donaldson was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper Mark Gillespie in the build-up.

Uwe Rosler was left incensed on the touchline by both decisions.

The Brentford manager had brought in Sam Saunders to replace Conor McAleny, whose loan spell from Everton was sadly ended by a broken leg last week.

And Farid El Alagui made his first league start since suffering a serious knee injury in October last year.

But the disappointing El Alagui was replaced by Will Grigg at half-time after Brentford had failed to create many chances in the opening period.

Left-back Scott Barron went closest in the first half when he charged into the box and fired a straight at the keeper.

The Bees dominated the second half but were left stunned when Craig saw red.

His challenge on Amoo seemed fair but the referee’s assistant flagged for a foul and, because of his position as Brentford’s last man when the incident occurred, Craig was dismissed.

Diagouraga’s ruled-out effort on 79 minutes also appeared harsh, with Donaldson jumping fairly for the ball.

Brentford (4-3-3):Button; Logan, Craig, Dean, Barron; Forshaw, McCormack, Saville (Diagouraga 75); Donaldson, El Alagui (Grigg 46), Saunders (Reeves 66)
Subs not used: Bonham, O’Connor, Dallas, Fillo
