Lee Carsley does not want the Brentford head coach’s job on a permanent basis and says he expects to leave the club at the end of the season.
Carsley, promoted from development-squad manager to head coach on Monday after Marinus Dijkuizen was sacked, suffered defeat at home to Birmingham in his first game in charge.
And he said: “I don’t want the job permanently. I didn’t ask to be a football manager. It certainly wasn’t something I put my hand up for.
“I want to be a coach – I love coaching. I’m still involved with the England Under-19s and I think the development side to the game is a big strength of mine.
“It’s just so happened that the last two clubs I’ve been at I’ve ended up as a caretaker manager.
“I wouldn’t have thought I could go back to being the club’s development coach either. I’ve been in the situation before at Coventry. It’s always difficult to go back.
“Kevin O’Connor’s there doing the development team anyway and he’s a good coach. He’s ready for it and he knows the club more than anyone. The development team is in good hands with him.”
Clayton Donaldson scored against his former club after Michael Morrison put Birmingham ahead in a 2-0 victory for the Blues at Griffin Park.
Carsley said: “They need to be given some time. I think they just need some self-belief and confidence to express themselves.
“That’s easier said than done. It’s something only they can draw out and they need a sense of togetherness back.”
