Brentford’s poor home form continued as they once again failed to convert endless chances.

Walsall have only won once on the road all season and sit two points above the relegation zone, but the Bees have now won only one of their last five home games.

Clayton Donaldson had their two best chances – the first a curling effort that fooled veteran Walsall keeper Jimmy Walker but was cleared off the line.

And Donaldson failed to find the target again after hesitating for what seemed like an age when he was put through one-on-one with Walker on 70 minutes.

Donaldson had earlier tested Walker – who was making his 530th appearance for the West Midlands side – in the opening moments with a meek effort, before Sam Saunders also forced the 38-year-old into a save.

But Walker was stranded when Donaldson’s curler looked destined for the far corner before the ball was punted off the line.

As solid as Walker was, it was Brentford’s stand-in keeper Simon Moore – in for the injured Richard Lee – who provided the save of the match just before half-time, when he pushed away former Manchester City striker Jon Macken’s shot from inside the six-yard box.

Brentford continued to be wasteful in the final third after the break and midfielder Jonathan Douglas should have done better with a clear sight at goal after a purposeful counter-attack.

But after Donaldson’s second calamitous miss, chances became few and far between and the draw means Brentford have fallen further away from the play-off places they occupied less than a month ago.
