Two for Grigg as Brentford beat Blades

Brentford 3 Sheffield United 1

Will Grigg scored his first Brentford goals to secure an important early-season win over their promotion rivals.

The striker, who joined on a free transfer from Walsall this summer, pounced twice inside the area in the second half to take the game beyond Sheffield United.

But Grigg was denied a hat-trick when his late penalty was saved by keeper George Long.

Adam Forshaw’s stunning effort from distance gave the Bees a first-half lead before Neil Collins headed in an equaliser just after the interval.

Brentford had the better of that first half and Forshaw went close early on with an effort that cleared the bar before a sweet, curling strike from the edge of the box opened the scoring.

On-loan Everton youngster Conor McAleny was impressive and twice went close just after the break, but poor marking allowed defender Collins to head in Stephen McGinn’s corner and bring the visitors level.

Grigg had been quiet but was in space to fire home George Saville’s cutback just after the hour and then he poked into an empty net for his second when Forshaw’s shot was parried.

Grigg was tripped by Harry Maguire with 10 minutes remaining but his spot-kick was a nice height for the United goalkeeper.
