Donaldson nets late winner for Bees

Brentford 3 Peterborough 2

Clayton Donaldson’s dramatic late winner saw Brentford come out on top in a ferocious clash with their promotion rivals.

They were forced to come from behind after losing a half-time lead against Darren Ferguson’s side, gifted to them by Gabriel Zakuani’s own goal.

Two goals in two second-half minutes from Jack Payne and Britt Assombalonga saw that lead overturned but the Bees deservedly equalised when Will Grigg got the final touch to George Saville’s header.

And then Donaldson fired low and hard into the far corner on 88 minutes to extend his team’s unbeaten run to seven league games.

Posh would have taken the lead had David Button not pulled off an excellent double-save early on.

Brentford were fortunate to go ahead when Zakuani put Alan McCormack’s dangerous cross into his own net with a clumsy diving header.

Peterborough came out stronger in the second half and had overturned the deficit within 15 minutes.

Payne’s superb looping volley from 20 yards was far out of Button’s reach and Assombalonga latched onto a precise through-ball and blasted into the net.

But substitutes Grigg and Farid El Alagui made a difference and Grigg made sure that Saville’s header crossed the line to equalise.

Donaldson bagged the winner in typical fashion, knocking the ball past his opponent onto his right foot and firing home.
