Warburton starts with dramatic win
Brentford 1 Oldham 0
Jonathan Douglas scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to give manager Mark Warburton victory in his first game in charge.
The midfielder rose at the far post to head home substitute Sam Saunders’ superb cross right at the death after the Bees had looked destined to be left frustrated.
Will Grigg, Harlee Dean and Saunders all went close to giving Brentford the lead before a goal in the third minute of added time secured an eighth win in nine league games.
Warburton was put in charge this week after Uwe Rosler left to join Wigan, and the former sporting director fielded an unchanged side from the one that beat Notts County.
After Grigg and Dean tested keeper Mark Oxley with early chances, Oldham should have taken the lead when they counter-attacked with five players against one Brentford defender but somehow failed to get a shot on goal.
Grigg should also have done better when he fired Jake Bidwell’s cross wide of the near post before Clayton Donaldson headed over from a corner.
Saunders replaced the disappointing Kadeem Harris in the second half and made the new man an immediate impact with a dangerous cross before his shot was blocked by an Oldham defender short of the line.
Brentford had an excellent case for a penalty when Donaldson was tripped in the box late on.
But the frustration did not last long, Saunders delivering another pinpoint cross which Douglas nodded in.
