Brentford are keen to add a right-back, a defensive midfielder, a winger and a striker to their squad during the January transfer window.
Boss Dean Smith wants more options in order to play different systems.
He wanted to sign a second winger in the summer after bringing in Sulley Kaikai on loan from Crystal Palace, and Brentford had offers for Chesterfield’s Gboly Ariyibi rejected.
Chesterfield, who are in financial turmoil, are prepared to sell Ariyibi next month and the Bees could return with a new offer.
Smith also wants more competition up front for Scott Hogan, having been disappointed by the poor progression of German striker Philipp Hoffman, but the Bees are also braced for interest in Hogan from other clubs.
Alan McCormack and Nico Yennaris have previously played at right-back but have become established midfield players, so the club want to bring in competition for Maxime Colin, as well as more strength in midfield.
