Brentford suffer defeat at Huddersfield
Huddersfield Town 2 Brentford 1
Brentford’s five-match winning streak came to an abrupt halt as a Jake Bidwell own goal proved to be decisive at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Despite creating the better chances in the first half, the Bees found themselves trailing at the break thanks to Sean Scannell’s 18th minute goal.
Championship strugglers Huddersfield, who had lost three of their last four but are unbeaten in six at home, extended their lead early in the second half as Bidwell turned in a cross from QPR loanee Jack Robinson.
Jonathan Douglas pulled one back on 70 minutes and the Bees applied pressure in the closing stages, with Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies denying Alan Judge and Tommy Smith.
Brentford were unable to break through and so suffered their first defeat since losing at Bolton six weeks ago.
Both teams missed good opportunities early on, with Huddersfield’s Nahki Wells firing into the side netting and Douglas nodding wide from an inviting Moses Odubajo delivery.
Just as the Bees were starting to get on top, the home side hit them with the opening goal. Robinson found Wells inside the box and his centre was put away by Scannell.
Brentford continued to create chances but couldn’t finish them, with Bidwell seeing a shot saved by Alex Smithies and Alex Pritchard twice firing just past the upright.
However, they were slow out of the blocks in the second half, not taking care of the ball, and they were 2-0 down within a few minutes as Robinson drove in a cross which Bidwell put past Button.
A double change midway through the second half turned the tide and one of the substitutes, Smith, was instrumental in setting up Douglas to drag Brentford back into the match.
Button then made an important save to deny Wells and the Bees pressed in the final 15 minutes, with Smithies denying Alan Judge and then Smith to keep Mark Warburton’s side at bay.
