Sergi Canos remains a doubt for Brentford ahead of their home game with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The Spanish midfielder picked up an ankle injury in the Bees’ final pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo on 29 July.
He left Griffin Park on that day in a protective boot and has since missed the Championship defeat at Sheffield United on Saturday and Tuesday’s League Cup win at AFC Wimbledon.
After the 3-1 win at Kingsmeadow, Smith said: “I’ve not had an update from the medical staff but he’s a doubt for Saturday still.
“However he’s recovering a lot quicker than expected that’s for sure.”
Fellow midfielders Alan Judge and Lewis Macleod remain long-term absentees but defender Harlee Dean – who has been told he will not be given the captaincy back unless he signs new contract – will be available after sitting out at Bramall Lane through suspension.
