Brentford beaten at home by Barnsley

Brentford 0 Barnsley 2

Brentford suffered their first home defeat of the season as goals from Adam Armstrong and Sam Winnall gave Barnsley victory at Griffin Park.

Barnsley striker Armstrong turned in a poor clearance just short of half-an-hour before Winnall tapped home the second on 67 minutes.

Maxime Colin hit the bar late on for Brentford but Dean Smith’s side are now four Championship games without a victory.

Unchanged from the side that drew at Derby in midweek, the Bees struggled to make clear-cut chances and fired only seven of their 20 shots on target.

Crystal Palace loanee Sulley Kaikai missed the mark twice in the opening 25 minutes, the second of which he should have turned in from close-range.

At the other end, Newcastle loanee Armstrong made no mistake after a sloppy defensive header fell straight to his feet inside the box.

Sam Saunders steered a header just over the crossbar for the Bees but his disappointing performance was ended at the interval when he was replaced by Josh Clarke.

The tireless Scott Hogan grafted out a couple of half-chances before Barnsley’s second, one of them a skilful volley from a tight angle that missed the near corner.

But a swift Barnsley breakaway was finished off by Winnall after Ryan Kent’s low shot bounced back off the near post.

And, after Colin hit the bar with a volley, Hogan wasted two further chances for Brentford in the last 10 minutes, the first he should have stuck away whilst one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Brentford (4-2-3-1):Bentley; Colin, Egan, Bjelland, Barbet; Woods, Yennaris; Saunders (Clarke 46), Sawyers (Hofmann 78), Kaikai (McEachran 58); Hogan.
Subs: Bonham, Macleod, Dean, Kerschbaumer
