Bees win and will face Chelsea in FA Cup
Brentford 2 Southend 1
“Champions of Europe, we’re coming for you!” was the cry from Brentford supporters after Clayton Donaldson’s winner secured an FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to holders Chelsea.
In a scintillating replay at Griffin Park, Brentford were kept at bay by their former goalkeeper Paul Smith – who saved a penalty from Harry Forrester – before Donaldson struck.
Paul Hayes put them ahead after 25 minutes when he tapped home Lee Hodson’s cross at the far post.
Smith had already been called into action, while Bees keeper Simon Moore then did magnificently to keep the the score at 1-0 when he tipped a close-range header from Chris Barker onto the crossbar.
Smith pulled off the save of the night to keep out Forrester’s spot-kick after Donaldson was tripped in the box by Mark Phillips, clawing the ball away from the top corner.
And after further saves from Smith to deny Brentford a second, Barry Corr headed in Ryan Leonard’s cross to put the away side deservedly level.
But there was nothing Smith could do when Donaldson broke into the area and the striker’s shot took a slight deflection.
