Bees well beaten in quarter-final – and injury problems worsen
Brentford were well beaten at St James’ Park in a one-sided Carabao Cup quarter final.
Sandro Tonali scored twice and Fabian Schär also netted for Newcastle on a miserable night for Thomas Frank’s side, who got a consolation goal in stoppage time, scored by Yoane Wissa.
To make matters worse for the Bees, who have been plagued by injuries to key players, Ethan Pinnock limped off after 13 minutes.
And Sepp van den Berg, who was initially named in the starting line-up, did not feature after suffering an injury during the pre-match warm-up.
Tonali opened the scoring by firing home after Brentford were unable to properly clear a cross from former Chelsea man Tino Livramento.
There was no way back for the visitors after Tonali doubled the Magpies’ lead with a tidy finish from Anthony Gordon’s cross.
Newcastle made it 3-0 when keeper Mark Flekken was unable to hold Lewis Hall’s low shot and Bruno Guimaraes teed up Fabian Schar for a simple tap-in.
Brentford rarely threatened but did manage a goal when Bryan Mbeumo squared to Wissa, who scored from close range.
