Sam Saunders has undergone exploratory surgery on his right knee.
The 30-year-old Brentford star has been struggling with an injury for the last two months and has not played since the win against Port Vale five weeks ago.
He had been in excellent form, winning the League One Player of the Month award for December.
Brentford are hopeful he will be able to return to action during the all-important run-in to the season as they chase promotion.
