Sheffield United 0 Brentford 0
Brentford picked up what could prove to be another crucial point as they chase automatic promotion.
They dominated large spells of the game but were unable to break the deadlock – and have now failed to score in three consecutive matches.
But they were the better side at Bramall Lane and strengthened their position in second place, now leading Leyton Orient by five points with a game still in hand.
There was controversy 10 minutes before half-time when Brentford were awarded a penalty and Sheffield United’s Kieron Freeman was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Marcello Trotta.
But after consulting his assistant, referee Eddie Ilderton reversed the decision and a drop ball was awarded instead, with Freeman – whose tackle had seemed a fair one – staying on the pitch.
Trotta had a great chance to score late in the game but his header from Stuart Dallas’ cross missed the target.
And Dallas shot wide in injury time after being set up by fellow substitute George Saville.
Earlier in the game, Toumani Diagouraga – back in the side after a loan spell at Portsmouth – and Clayton Donaldson both went close for the Bees.
Ryan Flynn had a decent chance for United but slammed his effort over after beating the offside trap.
Brentford remain six points behind leaders Wolves who also drew 0-0 away, at Stevenage.
Brentford (4-3-3) Button; McCormack, Tarkowski, Craig, Bidwell; Douglas, Diagouraga (Saville 71), Forshaw; Donaldson, Trotta, Judge (Dallas 79).
