Bees out after defeat at Southend
Southend 2 Brentford 1
Brentford went out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy after failing to take their chances to Roots Hall.
Despite being on the back foot for much of the game, Southend took control of the southern section quarter-final with first-half goals from Tamika Mkandawire and Kevan Hurst.
Paul Hayes pulled one back late on but the 2011 finalists were unable to find an equaliser.
Mkandawire’s deflected 25-yarder came against the run of play and Hurst doubled the lead by firing home after keeper Paul Smith’s long kick had been flicked on by Barry Corr.
The Shrimpers’ all-important second goal came after Brentford thought they had equalised when Hayes followed up and netted after Sam Saunders had been denied by Smith, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Antonio German missed two great chances to level, and at the other end Corr hit the bar as Southend threatened on the counter-attack.
Brentford at last made their pressure tell when Hayes finished well after being found by Harlee Dean’s flick-on.
Brentford: Moore; Dean, Kiernan, Bidwell (Pierre 45); Hodson, Reeves, Diagouraga (Legge 63), Barron; Saunders; Forrester (German 30), Hayes
Subs not used: Legge, Oyeleke, Dallas.
