Bees beaten by late goal in Frank’s first game

Thomas Frank suffered defeat in his first game in charge after Niclas Eliasson’s late winner stunned 10-man Brentford.

The Bees looked destined for a draw, despite Chris Mepham being sent off for two bookable offences, but the Bristol City right-back smashed in at the far post with just stoppage time left.

Ollie Watkins hit the post and Neal Maupay went close for the Bees late on as Frank’s substitutions set up his depleted side for a strong finish.

But City, who had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half, condemned Brentford to a sixth league game without victory and a first home defeat of the season.

Frank made four changes to the side that drew at Leeds, most notably bringing back Daniel Bentley in goal after he was dropped by Dean Smith.

And Bentley was impressive, making two good saves to deny Andreas Weimann in either half – the first just moments before Matty Taylor headed in Niclas Eliasson’s cross from an offside position.

Mepham, who shook off a knock to start, was first cautioned because of his part in a bust-up between players and he was dismissed just eight minutes later for an apparent trip on Eliasson.

But after the Bees looked more likely to find a winner, Eliasson burst into space at the far post to side foot home into the far corner on 89 minutes.
