Brentford got their first home win of the season – in controversial circumstances.

Romaine Sawyers scored the winner, firing home from near the edge of the penalty area after collecting Henrik Dalsgaard’s pass a couple of minutes into the second half.

Millwall thought they had equalised with 11 minutes remaining when Lee Gregory touched the ball into the net after Dalsgaard had brought down Jed Wallace.

However, referee Lee Probert had already blown for the penalty – and Dan Bentley dived to his right to keep out Gregory’s spot-kick.

Keeper Bentley also produced fine saves to push away long-range strikes from Wallace and Gregory.

And substitute Lasse Vibe twice came close to doubling the Bees’ lead.

The striker was denied by Jordan Archer and seconds later dragged a shot inches wide of the post.

Brentford: Bentley, Dalsgaard, Egan, Bjelland, Clarke, Woods, Yennaris, Sawyers, Jozefzoon (McEachran 74), Watkins (Mepham 89), Maupay (Vibe 65).
Subs not used: Daniels, Archibald, Barbet, Chatzitheodoridis.
