Brentford were undone by a late winner by on-loan Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah at Elland Road.
The Leeds substitute tapped in the only goal on his home debut with nine minutes remaining to finally breach a resolute defence and send the hosts back to he top of the Championship.
Leeds created more openings in the first half, notably when Patrick Bamford headed narrowly wide.
But they failed to make their possession count and the Bees had the best chance, Bryan Mbeumo curling a fine 25-yard effort against the inside of the post after a swift breakaway.
Leeds continued to dominate possession after the break without managing to pose much of a goal threat against a side well marshalled by former Whites defender Pontus Jansson.
The Bees, who have now lost two of their four league games and scored just twice so far this season, remained dangerous on the break and almost took the lead when Ollie Watkins cut inside on the left flank and shot just wide of the far post.
But with a valuable point within touching distance, Helder Costa teed up fellow substitute for a simple finish to earn all three points.

Brentford need more in attack and more control in midfield. They also give the ball away too often something they never did last season.
