Theophane’s reign ended by shock defeat
Ashley Theophane lost his British light-welterweight title to late stand-in Darren Hamilton in a big upset in Liverpool.
Hamilton, a replacement for Steve Williams, who pulled out for medical reasons, won a unanimous points decision to dethrone the Kilburn fighter.
It was the third defence of the title for Theophane and a victory would have seen him keep the coveted Londsale belt outright.
A win would also have boosted his chances of securing a shot at a world championship, making it a painful as well as surprise defeat for the 31-year-old.
He never got going against the Bristolian, who was determined to seize his chance and did enough to sway the three judges, who scored the bout 117-112 115-113 118-113 in his favour.
