Smith dazzles Wembley with quick win
Harrow’s super-featherweight prospect Mitchell Smith enhanced his growing reputation by destroying Gavin Reid in the first round at Wembley Arena.
Smith, roared on by more than 350 of his fans, floored his opponent with a cracking right and followed up with more heavy shots before the referee stepped in.
It was another exciting performance by the 20-year-old and extended his record to 6-0.
“In the training sessions I’ve done, I’ve been working on that shot,” Smith told West London Sport.
“I punch hard when I follow through with shots and that’s what I did. I was surprised the ref let him carry on to be honest.
“He [Reid] was game enough to get up and carry on. But I just swarmed all over him and the ref had to get him out of there.”
Mitchell’s victory came before West Londoner Steve O’Meara overcame a nasty cut to beat Chas Symonds on points.
Earlier in the evening, Wembley welterweight Gary Corcoran also maintained his unbeaten record, comfortably beating Tottenham’s Mark McKray on points.
But there was a controversial defeat for Northolt’s Ryan Toms.
The former southern area light-middleweight champion lost a points decision to John Thain despite the Scot suffering a broken nose and appearing to be soundly beaten.
Toms told West London Sport: “He nicked a couple of rounds because he was so sharp with his jab.
“But I hurt him to the body loads of times and his nose was battered. I thought I won the fight by at least three or four rounds.
“I won the fight clearly. It wasn’t even close. But I can’t change that decision – it is what it is.”
