Groves set to face Sierra in California

George Groves is set to take on Mexico’s Francisco Sierra in San Jose, California, on 28 July.

It will be the unbeaten Hammersmith fighter’s first outing since a second-round demolition of Paul Smith at Wembley Arena in November.

This year injuries have forced ‘The Saint’ to withdraw from a world title clash with WBO champion Robert Stieglitz and a defence of his British and Commonwealth belts against Scotland’s Kenny Anderson.

Sierra, 24, stands at 6ft 1in, is a former Mexican champion and has a record of 25-5-1 (22 KOs).

Groves, also 24, will feature on the undercard of a world title fight between welterweights Robert Guerrero and Selcuk Aydin.

It will be his second appearance in the United States. One of his 14 wins came against Alfredo Conteras in Las Vegas two years ago.
