Hiddink explains Fabregas substitution
Guus Hiddink said he withdrew Cesc Fabregas at half-time against Watford because he felt Chelsea needed “balance” in midfield.
Diego Costa scored twice as the champions drew 2-2 in Hiddink’s first match in charge since returning as Blues boss.
With his side having been caused problems by the Hornets in the first half, Hiddink opted to make a change, sending on John Mikel Obi in place of Fabregas.
Hiddink explained: “You can play when all your midfield is creative players and it is beautiful, but sometimes you have to look for a balance and we thought Mikel could bring that balance.
“You can play with all creative players – Matic, Fabregas, Oscar, Willian coming inside – but sometimes you have to choose in a different way.”
Hiddink also praised Costa for the striker’s improved performance.
