Hasselbaink’s appointment confirmed by QPR

QPR: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

QPR have confirmed the appointment of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as manager.

Dutchman Hasselbaink, 43, has signed a rolling contract and is bringing David Oldfield to Loftus Road to be his assistant.

They worked together at Burton Albion, who won the League Two title under Hasselbaink last season and are currently top of the third tier.

The former Chelsea striker was keen to return to London and desperately wanted the job at Rangers, where Neil Warnock has been in interim charge since the sacking of Chris Ramsey.

Hasselbaink, whose playing career also included spells at Leeds, Middlesbrough and Charlton, spent a year as Burton boss.

Before that he was manager of Belgian side Royal Antwerp for a year, where he rejected a new contract in order to pursue jobs in England.

Former Leicester and Manchester City midfielder Oldfield, 47, was previously reserve-team manager at Peterborough, where he had a short spell as caretaker boss, and has also worked at West Brom and MK Dons.

Warnock and his assistant Kevin Blackwell have left the club following their short-term roles.

Rangers spoke to several out-of-work managers, including Chris Powell, and regarded Wolves boss Kenny Jackett, who had a four-year spell as QPR assistant manager under Ian Holloway, as a potential option.

A number of other current Championship managers were also briefly considered, including MK Dons’ Karl Robinson, but Rangers’ owners were unenthused, with Hasselbaink very much the preferred choice.
