Gray on target as Bees win in Portgual
Jermaine Udumaga, Andre Gray and Jonathan Douglas all scored as Brentford began the Marinus Dijkhuizen era with a 3-0 victory over Portuguese second-tier side SC Farense.
Summer signings Yoann Barbet, Konstantin Kerschbaumer and Akaki Gogia started for the Bees, but it was 20-year-old forward Udamaga who opened the scoring late in the first half, from Moses Odubajo’s centre.
Gogia was the only player to keep his place after the interval and Gray was unlucky to see an effort blocked by a defender after he had rounded the goalkeeper.
Farense, who were in the Portuguese top flight back in 2002, have had to climb back up the leagues after a rapid descent to the sixth tier and proved worthy opponents, with a shot cannoning back off the crossbar.
But Brentford doubled their lead when Gray finished off after a quickly taken free-kick and Douglas added a third just before full-time from a rebounded shot.
Brentford first-half team: Bonham; Odubajo, Dean, Barbet, Clarke; Diagouraga, Kerschbaumer, Yennaris; Jota, Udumaga, Gogia.
Brentford second-half team: Smith; McCormack, Tarkowski, O’Connell, Bidwell; Douglas, Tebar, Laurent; Gogia, Gray, Judge.
