Bees boss Warburton proud of players

Brentford manager Mark Warburton insists he will be proud of his players no matter what the outcome of the final game of the regular season.

Warburton will take charge of his team possibly for the last time when they face Wigan, but the Bees can still clinch a play-off spot after beating Reading 2-0 in their penultimate game.

He said: “The players are aware of the significance of the situation so to come here and win against a quality side was important.

“We got what we deserved, despite not being at our best. Now it’s really tight, so next week all we can do is focus on ourselves.

“It will come down to one or two goals. It’s the nature of the division for them to fly in at both ends, so all we have to do is put on a really positive, high-tempo and high-quality performance.”

It was announced in February that Warburton will be leaving at the end of the season because a difference of opinion with Brentford’s owner Matthew Benham over the future direction of the club.

“It’s very disappointing to be leaving, obviously,” Warburton said.

“I’ve been here for four or five years but it is what it is and I’m delighted to have been associated with this great club. I’m sure the club will keep on going forward.

“I’m proud of these players. We knew we had a good squad at the start of the season and they deserve the credit to be vying for the play-offs come game 46.”
