QPR boss shrugs off link with Jelavic

Neil Warnock has played down the prospect of a big-money bid for Glasgow Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic.

Warnock was made aware of the player by Motherwell manager Stuart McCall, who the QPR boss knows from their time together at Sheffield United.

An R’s scout went to watch Jelavic in action at the weekend, prompting speculation that the club are keen to sign him when the transfer window reopens next month.

But Warnock insisted he had no plans to table an offer, and added: “He’s one of a number of players that’s been mentioned to me, not the other way around.”

The Loftus Road hierarchy held a three-hour meeting on Monday morning, part of which was attended by Warnock and his assistant Mick Jones.

They discussed transfer targets, with Warnock hoping to use the loan market to supplement his squad for the second half of the season.

He is particularly keen to capture the best young talent from elite clubs on loan with a view to possibly signing them permanently in the summer.

“We’re going through targets and recommendations and getting their [the board’s] input,” Warnock explained.

“We’ll be looking at loaning one or two players – a couple in England and probably one abroad.

“We want people who’ve maybe got something to prove, like Kyle Walker last year. I think we helped make him the player he is today.

“We’re hoping to do that again. There are one or two very good young Premier League players who need games. We’re looking to pick the brains of the top clubs.”
