Bees boss embarrassed after Cup win
Brentford manager Mark Warburton described the extraordinary 6-6 scoreline against Dagenham & Redbridge as “embarrassing” for his side.
The Bees needed penalties to progress to the Capital One Cup second round after a 12-goal thriller that Warburton insisted should never have happened.
“The players used the words embarrassing, disappointed, frustrated – and they’re right. We’ve got to be better than that,” he said.
“After the first half an hour that should have been game set and match. From a position of total dominance in the first half, playing very nice stuff, moving the ball well, we could have had a lot more goals than we did.
“From that to suddenly conceding just before half time, with sloppy defending and poor decision making – I’ve never seen that before in my life.”
The Bees boss made nine changes to the side that drew their opening Championship game against Charlton, handing full debuts to Marcos Tebar, Nick Proschwitz and youngster Montell Moore.
“We’ve got good players in there and I thought the performance in the first half an hour showed that,” Warburton added.
“We can’t be open and naive at the back. I thought we were split and too far apart at times, with too much distance between units.
“At 3-2 at half-time they were in it, and it shouldn’t have been the case, but we’ll learn from it.”
