Ouseph loses out in European final
Rajiv Ouseph was unable to land England’s first European men’s singles gold medal for 24 years, losing to top seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark 21-18 21-10 in the Russian city of Kazan.
Hounslow’s British number one and 2010 Commonwealth silver medallist started slowly in the final and Jorgensen raced into a 7-1 lead.
But Ouseph responded with a nine-point run to lead 13-8 and then 16-10 before the game was levelled at 17-17.
Jorgensen prevailed and then dominated the second game, leading 11-3 at the halfway stage before going on to win his first European title, leaving his opponent to settle for a silver medal.
Ouseph now faces three major tournaments in the next four months: Thomas Cup finals in Delhi, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the World Championships in Copenhagen.
