Half-time: West Brom 0 Chelsea 1
Branislav Ivanovic’s goal on the stroke of half-time put Chelsea ahead at The Hawthorns, where a victory would put them four points clear at the top of the Premier League.
The Serbian defender smashed home after Willian’s corner had been flicked on by David Luiz.
Earlier, Willian turned cleverly and fired just wide of the target.
At the other end, Chris Brunt shot wide after being teed up by Thievy Bifouma.
With Chelsea skipper John Terry still out and Frank Lampard on the bench, keeper Petr Cech was handed the captain’s armband.
Fernando Torres, fit again after a knee problem, is among the Blues substitutes.
Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Ramires, Matic; Willian, Oscar, Hazard; Eto’o.
Subs: Schwarzer, Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Schurrle, Salah, Torres.
