Fulham star braced for ‘difficult year’

Fulham midfielder Scott Parker admits his side must brace themselves for a “difficult year” following their woeful start to the season.

The Whites’ 2-1 reverse at home to Swansea on Saturday was their fourth league loss in a row and they languish in the bottom three with eight defeats from their opening 12 matches.

And Parker has acknowledged that they need the help of Rene Meulensteen, who has been drafted in as head coach to assist under-fire manager Martin Jol.

“It’s going to be a difficult year for us with the way it’s started in terms of points,” said Parker.

“If you look at the table it doesn’t look pretty – it’s there for all to see. We need to get some points and quickly because it’s going to be a tough season for us.

“Rene’s come in and we’ve only been working with him for three or four days.

“It’s a new person in the building and along with the lads we’ve got before and the rest of the squad, we’ve got to stick together.

“Hopefully Rene can bring a bit of experience and guidance and we can get some points.”

Saturday’s defeat led to more jeers being aimed at Jol from disgruntled Fulham fans who want a change of manager.

“I can understand the fans’ frustrations – all of us are frustrated,” Parker added.

“Every one of us in there are bitterly disappointed, along with the fans. They come and pay their money and want to see us winning games, and at the moment we’re not doing that.”
