Boss Jol feared Fulham would be thrashed
Fulham boss Martin Jol admitted he was simply relieved his team avoided a thrashing after being outplayed by Southampton at St Mary’s.
Jol’s men were beaten 2-0 by the Saints, whose two first-half goals left the visiting manager fearing worse was to come.
He responded by making a change at the back, replacing Sascha Riether with the more defensively-minded Aaron Hughes, and the Whites were at least able to prevent another goal being conceded.
“[After] the first half I felt we could be on the end of a hammering and to come away with a 0-0 in the second half is the only good thing,” said Jol.
“We had a problem with Adam Lallana up front and the rotation with Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert.
“But that had nothing to do with the goals. One goal was from a corner again and a cross with a flick-on.
“I thought after the first half we really had to repair the damage and that is what we tried to do with Aaron Hughes and it helped a bit.”
