Button’s mistake is costly for Brentford

Stevenage 2 Brentford 1

More dreadful defending was to blame for Brentford’s second successive league defeat.

They took a deserved lead on 12 minutes through Clayton Donaldson’s tap-in, but keeper David Button made a calamitous error to gift Stevenage an equaliser.

The former Tottenham man attempted to take on striker Francois Zoko but booted the ball against him and the rebound ended up in the net.

And Zoko was on hand again to capitalise on another defensive mix-up and fire home the winner before half-time.

Brentford’s defending has been a concern during a number of games this season and showed few signs of improvement in their fourth defeat in five matches in all competitions.

Uwe Rosler’s side had their chances, with Shaleum Logan hitting the bar in the first half.

And they could have been ahead after 40 seconds when Marcello Trotta and Alan McCormack both forced saves from keeper Chris Day.

They went ahead when Jonathan Douglas, making his first league start of the season, was put through and chipped the ball over the advancing Day for Donaldson to poke home.

Stevenage hit back and after Button’s gaffe Zoko finished coolly from inside the box after the Bees failed to clear.

Brentford slightly improved in the second half but chances were wasted by Adam Forshaw, Donaldson and McCormack.
