Ealing initiative aims to build on handball’s Olympic legacy
Handball was a major hit during London 2012. Twelve months on, an initiative in Ealing aims to rekindle that interest and get teenagers playing the game.
Ealing Handball Club (www.ealinghandball.com), which caters for under-16 boys, is behind the grassroots initiative.
With support from Ealing Council and funding from Sportivate, six secondary schools will take part in a programme that includes taster sessions, an after-school handball club and an inter-school competition.
It is designed to encourage PE teachers to see handball as a great sport for youngsters to get involved in, and to establish it as a top-five school team sport alongside football, rugby, cricket and netball.
Ealing Handball Club has therefore partnered with leading local men’s and women’s handball club Ruislip Eagles to organise the West London Handball Festival.
The event will take place on Saturday 5 October at Northolt High School from 11.15am until 2.30pm.
Kids will have an opportunity to experience the fun side of handball, play matches, take penalties against an adult English League goalkeeper, be photographed with a handball Team GB Olympian and win prizes.
Ealing Handball Club and Ruislip Eagles Handball Club coaches and players will be on hand to organise and make this a great experience for the kids.
More information will be posted on www.faceboook.com/westlondonhandballfestival closer to the event.
So if you’re a boy or girl aged 11-15, why not give handball a go?
