Bees must be mentally stronger – Grigg

Striker Will Grigg has admitted that Brentford must be mentally stronger if they are to recover from their patchy start to the season.

The Bees lost to League One’s surprise package Leyton Orient on Monday night – their first home defeat of the season and a result that left them 12 points adrift of Orient at the top and seven behind Peterborough and Wolves.

Brentford were tipped as promotion favourites at the beginning of the campaign but summer signing Grigg says this week’s loss highlighted their shortcomings.

“Heads went down after the first goal. We didn’t do the right things after that and that’s where we have to be mentally stronger,” the 22-year-old told West London Sport.

“Up until the goal we were the better side and created good chances in the second half.

“But it was sloppy play by us for the penalty and then we lost concentration for their second, and after that we never really got back in the game.

“At half-time we all said the first goal would be crucial, and with the way we were playing, if we’d have gone 1-0 up we probably would have won the game. It was disappointing.”

Manager Uwe Rosler has put together a wealth of attacking players this season and used five of them in the defeat against Orient.

Grigg started in a front three with Clayton Donaldson and Martin Fillo, before on-loan pair Marcello Trotta and Joao Teixeira came on in the second half.

And Grigg added: “The manager was frustrated that we didn’t take our chances.

“It’s not a case of the front two aren’t scoring goals and missing chances. We’ve had chances all over the pitch and we’ve just got to start taking them.

“I think at times it’s just not falling right for me and Clayton but we are getting opportunities. We’ve just got to build on the positives.”
