Everton v Chelsea player ratings

Despite dominating much of the game, Chelsea suffered their first league loss since Blues boss Jose Mourinho’s return. Here’s how we rated the players in their 1-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park.

Petr Cech: 6
Could do little to prevent Everton’s goal and was untroubled for most of the match, although he did produce a good save late on.

Branislav Ivanovic: 7
Solid defensively and got forward when he could. Sensible on the ball and sent in a couple of decent crosses.

David Luiz: 7
Very good defensively and when in midfield. Composed on the ball and worked hard off it, constantly closing down Everton’s lively attacking players.

John Terry: 7
Again showed signs of being closer to his best form. His aerial ability and reading of the game meant he looked comfortable.

Ashley Cole: 6
Had his work cut out containing the energetic Seamus Coleman before making way for Fernando Torres when Mourinho opted to send on an extra striker in the second half.

John Obi Mikel: 7
Has his critics, but Mikel was quietly effective in this match. Uncomplicated on the ball and did a tidy job screening the Chelsea back four. He was caused some problems by Everton prospect Ross Barkley though.

Ramires: 7
Quiet in spells but showed his trademark energy when he burst into the box and had a couple of decent opportunities.

Eden Hazard: 6
Coleman was so impressive he managed to both pose Cole some problems and also keep Hazard quiet at the other end. It was a frustrating game for the Belgian, who worked hard to find space and produced a couple of clever passes, but otherwise found it hard to make an impact.

Juan Mata: 6
Lively in the opening half an hour but faded somewhat before being replaced in the second half.

Andre Schurrle: 6
Should have scored. Worked hard but wasted a great chance in the first half and it proved to be a costly miss.

Samuel Eto’o: 7
Showed plenty of promise on his debut, with his skill and movement causing Everton problems. His link-up play bodes well for the future but he too missed a good chance before Everton scored the all-important goal.

Frank Lampard: 6
Involved in the play in a good spell of Chelsea pressure after his introduction from the bench, but Everton’s hardworking midfield responded well.

Oscar: 6
Was unable to make any real impact after coming on.

Fernando Torres: 6
Worked hard after being sent on in the second half to give Chelsea an extra attacking outlet, but the home defence was able to adapt to the visitors’ change.
