Brentford are given a thrashing by Derby

Derby County 5 Brentford 0

Brentford’s involvement in the Capital One Cup ended with a thrashing at the hands of Championship side Derby.

Nigel Clough’s team dominated the game and had a 3-0 lead at half-time thanks to goals from Chris Martin, Connor Salmon and Will Hughes.

The Bees were brighter early in the second half but Derby’s quality was never in question and strikers Martin and Salmon both bagged their second goals late on.

Brentford manager Uwe Rosler made 10 changes and included youngsters Jack Bonham and Josh Clarke in his starting 11.

The Rams made just four changes from their league outing at the weekend and first-choice striker Martin opened the scoring when he headed in Craig Bryson’s cross from close range.

On-loan Cardiff defender Ben Nugent’s poor pass allowed Derby to play their way through to Salmon, who finished neatly for the second.

And Hughes scored with a classy half-volley to put the game beyond Brentford by the break.

Jake Reeves and Javi Venta had shots that sailed wide of the Derby goal and youngsters Luke Norris, Aaron Pierre and Alfie Mawon all saw rare minutes on the pitch.

But quality finishes from Martin and Salmon capped a resounding win for Clough’s men.
