After beating Aston Villa, Chelsea sit top of the Premier League with two wins from two matches. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in their controversial victory at Stamford Bridge.

Petr Cech: 8
Could perhaps have done better for Villa’s goal, but made two crucial saves to deny Andreas Weimann in the second half and was also quick off his line to thwart Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Branislav Ivanovic: 8
Lucky not to be sent off before scoring the winner. But score the winner he did and, by fair means and foul, he made a big contribution at the back as well.

Gary Cahill: 5
Had a game to forget against his former club. Was given a tough time by the likes of Christian Benteke and Agbonlahor and looked uncomfortable on the ball too at times.

John Terry: 5
As well as arguably being fortunate not to concede a stoppage-time penalty, the Blues skipper was given all sorts of problems by Benteke and was at fault for the striker’s goal.

Ashley Cole: 6
Had a solid game at left-back although he did not venture forward much, particularly in the second half.

Ramires: 7
Had his work cut out, both in terms of holding his own in midfield and screening a centre-back pairing who were enduring a tough night. Did well though.

Frank Lampard: 6
Had an unremarkable game before serving up a peach of a free-kick for Ivanovic to head home the all-important second goal.

Juan Mata: 6
Well short of his brilliant best as he builds up his match fitness following a delayed pre-season break.

Oscar: 7
Brilliant in the first half-hour and delivered a clever pass in the build-up to Chelsea’s opening goal. Faded from the game after that as Villa came on strong.

Eden Hazard: 7
Another who was excellent early on and played a key part in the first goal before finding the going tough as the game progressed.

Demba Ba: 6
Unselfish and occupied Villa’s defence with his strength and movement, but offered no real goal threat and his touch was poor at times.

Andre Schurrle: 6
Has looked promising since his arrival and once again showed ability and a willingness to shoot after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Romelu Lukaku: 6
Was a handful after coming off the bench and will no doubt feel he deserves a starting place ahead of Ba and Fernando Torres.
