Harry: Spurs duo would be happy at QPR
Harry Redknapp insists a move to QPR would be good for Scott Parker and Jermain Defoe.
The Rangers manager wants to sign both players from his former club Tottenham and has had an offer accepted for Parker, who has discussed personal terms but is also wanted by Fulham.
Redknapp believes the midfielder, 32, might be better off playing for a promotion-chasing Championship side than choosing to stay in the top flight.
“If you’re in this division and playing well it’s better than not playing,” he said.
“Sometimes you get more enjoyment at a team looking to go somewhere than a team just hanging in there in the Premier League with no chance of winning anything and maybe in a battle all year to stay in the division.
“We feel we’re a club that’s looking to get back up.
“If you ask Paul Merson he’ll say that getting promoted when I had him at Portsmouth was one of the happiest times of his career.
“We made a good offer to Scott and agreed terms with Tottenham. It’s up to Scott what he wants to do.”
Former West Ham star Parker was Tony Fernandes’ first-choice signing when the Malaysian took over as QPR chairman two years ago.
He ended up moving to Spurs but Rangers are now hopeful they will be able to bring him to west London.
Redknapp added: “We’d love to have him here but it’s up to Scott.
“There was an agreement between us and Tottenham but if someone else comes in for him he’s entitled to go there.
“The chairman has agreed a deal with [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy and it’s now up to Scott whether he comes here or goes elsewhere.”
There has been speculation that Defoe, 31, will consult England boss Roy Hodgson before deciding whether to join the R’s.
And Redknapp, who signed the striker for Spurs and Portsmouth, does not believe Defoe’s chances of being selected for next year’s World Cup in Brazil would be affected should he drop down from the Premier League.
Redknapp said: “The manager knows him and he’s not going to become a bad player because he’s playing in the Championship.
“Roy knows what Scott Parker and Jermain Defoe can do. He knows who he wants to take and I don’t think whether they play in the Championship or not affects whether they’ll go to Brazil.”
