Jordan: Goal a ‘huge’ moment for Austin

QPR coach Joe Jordan believes Charlie Austin’s first goal for the club was a ‘huge’ moment for the striker.

Austin was in the right place at the right time to turn home a Jermaine Jenas volley on his full debut as Rangers won 2-0 in the Capital One Cup against Exeter.

Austin scored 28 goals last term for Burnley before being snapped up by the R’s last week.

“Scoring on your full debut is huge,” said former Scotland striker Jordan.

“The longer you go without a goal, the more the pressure grows. As a goalscorer you want to score as fast as you can and he’s done that. He’ll score goals this season.

“Getting the goal was great, but I think his overall play, looking at it from another angle, really pleased us.

“He made some good runs, hit the channels, he played well with both Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson.”

Austin’s goal could have been one of many in the first 15 minutes as Exeter barely came out of their own half.

A comfortable win for Rangers was sealed by Danny Simpson’s goal on 54 minutes.

“It could have been more in that first half-hour,” added Jordan.

“We played some really good football, created chances and should have finished the game. The second goal was very, very important.”
