Trotta seals crucial Brentford victory
Crewe 0 Brentford 2
Marcello Trotta’s late goal, scored less than two minutes after he came on as a substitute, sealed a victory that keeps Brentford in the race for automatic promotion.
Uwe Rosler’s side, who took an early lead courtesy of Bradley Wright-Phillips, moved back up to third in the table – only two points behind second-placed Bournemouth.
Wright-Phillips, on loan from Charlton, struck after 12 minutes at Gresty Road – and the goal was a beauty.
Clayton Donaldson met Sam Saunders’ pass with a back-heel to Shaleum Logan, whose first-time cross was headed in by Wright-Phillips at the near post.
The Bees almost doubled their lead when Harlee Dean headed against the bar, while Wright-Phillips, Adam Forshaw and Jonathan Douglas all had chances to make it 2-0 before the interval.
They continued to create openings after the restart and top scorer Donaldson missed two great chances to score, heading over free-kicks from Saunders and Forshaw.
At the other end, keeper Simon Moore made a good save to deny to deny Harry Davis.
But Brentford were deserved winners and their fine display was capped when on-loan Fulham striker Trotta fired home seven minutes from time after being set up by Douglas.
Brentford: Moore, Logan, Dean, Craig, Bidwell, Forshaw (Hodson 73), Douglas, Adeyemi, Saunders (Diagouraga 71), Donaldson, Wright-Phillips (Trotta 82).
