Bowen unsure whether Hughes would take Leeds United manager’s job

Mark Bowen has told talkSPORT he is unsure whether Mark Hughes would be interested in the Leeds United manager’s job.

Hughes has been touted as a possible replacement for Neil Warnock at Elland Road.

The Welshman previously replaced Warnock at QPR, where he was assisted by Bowen, only to be sacked earlier this season with the team bottom of the table.

Warnock, openly bitter about being sacked at Loftus Road, this week commented that he hoped Hughes would succeed him at Leeds so he could ‘destroy another team of mine’.

Bowen said: “I don’t know whether Mark would want the Leeds job.

“He’s been having a rest away from football and, as the old cliché goes, recharging the batteries. I’m sure he’ll want to come back.”

And Bowen hit back at Warnock’s remarks about Hughes, implying that the former Crystal Palace and Sheffield United boss is partly responsible for Rangers’ problems.

“There are reasons for what has gone on at QPR and what we inherited,” said Bowen.

“Everybody knows QPR have been in a huge transitional period but it does stick in my throat a bit that Neil has lost another job and started throwing mud around.

“We finished the season getting rid of 21 senior players who weren’t, with all due respect to them, up to the Premier League.

“Out of all of the players that left not one of them went on to gain a Premier League contract. These are players who Neil Warnock had brought in to the club.

“On the first day we were there we noticed there were 10 or 11 players training on their own or with the reserve-team coach.

“These weren’t players who had a significant number of games in the league and equally they weren’t players who were earning buttons at the time.

“When you look at Mark Hughes’ Premier League record, before he went to QPR, it was fabulous – he had never been out of the top 10.

“When you look at Neil Warnock’s record I think the three times he’s been in the top league he’s been relegated twice, with Notts County and Sheffield United, and won the sum total of about 14 Premier League games.

“There’s no need for it. Neil Warnock doesn’t need to come out and say things like that.”
